On the Playground

While it is officially autumn in In-Betwix, summer weather is making one last appearance. Saja and Marzi decided to take advantage of the warm, sunny day to go to the playground.  Both prefer to be outside and active with skateboarding, tennis and cook outs among their favourite activities.

Today Saja wanted to try out her new jump rope. Her old one had been chewed by naughty puppy so Lubelle had given her a beautiful new blue one. She'd carefully kept it away from the puppy to avoid further chewing temptation.

Marzi preferred to play hopscotch today. Grand gave her some chalk and she carefully drew her hopscotch board on the side walk.

Naughty puppy, not really meaning to be naughty, got caught up in the exuberance of their games and accidentally bumped Marzi who lost her balance and fell.

Saja dropped her jump rope and quickly ran over to help Marzi. Naughty puppy feeling badly he'd knocked Marzi down tried to apologize by licking Marzi's face. Eew puppy drool! That just added insult to injury!

Saja finally got the situation under control and helped both Marzi and the puppy back to Grand's. Knowing the kids in her care, Grand saved the day by supplying ice cream all around.  It looks like naughty puppy might be about to find himself in the dog house again!

Jive Talkin'

It's Saturday morning at Grand's house and each of the kids have their favourite routine.  Whiffy likes to sit and watch cartoons with his action figures. Winnie the Pooh and Smurfs are usually on just after breakfast. Liam and Angel get to go to the park with the Nanny or to the indoor play park if the weather isn't cooperating like today.

Serenity and Miss Pepper have a different view of Saturday mornings. Miss Pepper found an old record player and some vinyl records. Serenity helped her get  the record player down the hall by putting it on an old blanket they found.  While Serenity pulled the ends of the blanket, Miss Pepper pushed on the old machine from behind.  Once they had maneuvered it into place and plugged it in, they started sifting through the couple of dozen records they'd found with it. Serenity decided  the BeeGee's was such a fun name that she would have to listen to that one first.

Turns out Jive Talkin' is the perfect music for a Saturday morning dance party!

Stand Back Everyone!

Here in In-Betwix those last few bittersweet days of August are coming to a close. The fairies and pixies are spending a lot of time pursuing the art of doing nothing but reading and lounging in the sun, appreciating the summer scents of flowers, freshly mowed grass while sipping on lemonade.

Flit just finished reading "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone". Since she's supposed to be a house fairy, she thought it was high time she learned to use magic and has been imagining herself as a wee Hermione Granger!

So off she went in search of the rest of the gang hoping to show off her wand and perhaps try out a spell or two she'd been working on.

"Stand back everybody, I'm going to try magic!"

"Uh oh!" exclaimed Weasley, "I'm so outta here!"

"Come on Weasley, you don't think she can really do magic do you?" argued Crumb.
"Well, I'm not taking any chances," yelled Nixie as she high tailed it into the house. "Remember the giant thistle?"

Murphy, not having a chance to escape, chose to grab onto the post in front of her just in case.

A deafening bang reverberated through the quiet summer air and a bright flash of light blinded everyone. When the noise had died off and Flit could see again, she looked around with astonishment at the havoc she'd managed to create. Of course, she quickly checked to make sure no one was hurt.

"Flit! Get me down from here!

"Whaaa...t happened?"

"Ugh. I'm so going to break that wand over her head!"

"I'm okay...really, just give me a moment. I don't think anything is broken."

"Oops! "

It's a good thing August is just about over. Butterlea residents will be starting to bring in the harvest next week in preparation for winter. I'm sure Murphy and Nixie are going to be finding lots of work to keep Flit busy. Once they get that wand away from her anyway!

Who's that jumping on the bed...

...why Calla and Linnie that's who!

There's never a dull moment in In-Betwix these days!  Calla couldn't wait to show off her bedroom to Linnie and it wasn't long before the boots and shoes were off so the jumping could begin.

The Drum

With so many visitors at Grand's the younger children can get overwhelmed. Serenity needed a bit of peace and quiet so she and Miss Pepper decided to sneak off to their hideout in the wall. It's far away from the action and usually very quiet. They'd just settled down for a knitting lesson when a series of loud bangs made them jump!

Since Serenity's hands were a little occupied holding the yarn that Miss Pepper was patiently winding in to a ball, they decided to ignore the interruption and settled back in to a rhythm. Swish, wind, swish, wind....

...bang, bang, bangety, bangety, bop, bop, bang!  This time the noise was too much. Serenity dropped the yarn and ran off down the hall to see what was causing all the racket.

Oh no! One of those visitors gave Whiffy a drum!
"Make him stop please Grand! He's hurting my head!"

It's a good thing Whiffy is still young enough for an afternoon nap.

Summer Guests and the Giant Thistle Incident

Aelbridge isn't the only place dealing with the influx of summer visitors. Butterlea, it seems, is the place for the fairy and pixie crowd to hang out during those hot, hazy days of summer. The local bed and breakfast is hosting Weasley and Flit for a couple of months. Of course Crumb is still camping out in Beittoven's back yard.

Yesterday was the annual woodland picnic and all five pixies spent the day roaming the forest and fields around Butterlea looking for mushrooms, fiddle-heads and other delicacies to put up for the long winter.

Flit, unfamiliar with the local flora, managed to tangle with a giant thistle. She spent several horrified minutes suspended by her sweet blond curls before Murphy and Crumb were able to rescue her. Sadly the only way to release her from the thistle was to cut all of her hair off.

This morning Crumb loaned her a hat and the puppies were happy to give her some moral support!

Linnie meets Dair

It is summer time in In-Betwix and for those living in Aelbridge that means tourists and summer residents. It also means that Alasdair Creighton, Second in Command of the Wilders, comes to the city to make his annual report to the Council of Elders.

Poor Dair didn't realize when he asked Grand if he could bunk at her Estate that she would be hosting a whole big group of those summer residents. Much to his dismay, Linnie, a feisty shadow sprite, decided she wanted to shadow his every move. She followed him to Council Quarters and then decided it would be great fun to wreak a little sprite havoc!
Linnie led Dair on a merry chase and somehow managed to zoom in on the one office Dair wanted to avoid. Willow Nerys Llewellyn had enough reason to dislike Dair. He's not just a Wilder but heir to the Leadership and Willow leads the faction on Council that want to sever the longstanding agreement that has the Wilders guarding and patrolling the perimeters of the Shield in the wilds. Willow would prefer that In-Betwix's Elite Guard take over that role despite the fact that they have no affinity for the wilds.

Now Dair is going to need to explain how he let a shadow sprite evade him and get in to Willow's office which is under renovation and certainly no place for a wee thing like Linnie to be playing.

"Linnie!" Dair exclaims, "Get down from there! It's not safe in here and you are invading Miss Llewellyn's privacy."
Willow can barely contain her laughter. The sight of tall, broad shouldered Alisdair Creighton trying to grasp for a wiggling Linnie as she tries to shinny up the chair to to the top of the fireplace is just too funny. The fact that Dair is giving the time to a shadow sprite at all is almost beyond her comprehension. Dair is always so serious and business like despite the wild coloured hair, bright green flashing eyes and the rough Wilder clothes. Today he almost looked like he was having fun!
"I wonder," she thinks to herself, "which is the real Dair?"

The new house

Beittoven has been hard at work on Mellowdi's new house. He enlisted Crumb to help him out with some painting. Since the weather is nice today he got up on the ladder himself to inspect Crumb's work.

It's looking good!

Miss Daisy comes through!

Well, it appears that Miss Daisy the local Realtor in Butterlea has found the perfect house for the village's newcomer. Mellowdi won't be able to move in for awhile as the house is in pretty bad shape. But Beittoven has assured both Miss Daisy and the new owner that he'll have it looking spiffy and comfortable before winter!

Meanwhile in Butterlea...

Miss Daisy, the Realtor, has asked Beittoven to go and check out some properties for her. Since he's the local contractor, it makes sense for him to give an estimate as to how much it will cost to renovate.

Now Beittoven doesn't know much about the potential clients other than one is a single female fairy and the other is a pixie, gender unknown, looking for a spot to open a pub. He's been to see several locations all completely unsuitable. The first was a cute little cottage which would have been excellent for the fairy except for the location, right next to a fox hole! Beittoven has put it on his list of "potential to relocate".

The second and third turned out to be much too small even for a fairy. But the fourth seemed promising.

There is an entrance just under the fungi that would be perfect for a front door.  It's in a good location not far from the sweet little two story. I guess we'll have to see what Miss Daisy thinks!

Angel and the Attic

It seems to Angel that Grand's house goes on forever, and ever!  Yesterday when all the other kids were writing end of year tests for school, Angel, who is only three and doesn't go to school yet, wandered off exploring.  She found a set of stairs just outside the nursery that lead up to the attic.

Now I know what you are thinking, attics are dusty, musty places full of spiders and just not a safe place for a three year old to be exploring unsupervised!  It's okay to think that as I'm sure that is what most attics are like. But this is Grand's attic and she knows that eventually one or all of the kids in her care will end up there.

It wasn't long before Angel came across just the thing she'd been searching for but hadn't known it!  There in the corner was a unicorn just the right size for a wee thing to go for a ride.

Except everyone knows that riding a unicorn isn't as easy as that!  You can't just get on thinking the unicorn wants you there or will even move for you.  So Angel sat down with her dollies and had a long chat with the creature hoping to make friends with him.

Of course just being friendly with a unicorn is no guarantee so Angel got out her magic wand. A quick wave of the wand and she was riding the unicorn in fine style. And apparently the unicorn's name is Fred!

Spring Part 2

It may be spring but when you are working hard it does get warm. Crumb found a spot for a quick nap!

Unfortunately for him, Murphy came across him while walking in the woods.  She'll calm down once she sees all the grass that Crumb has managed to cut so far.

Tuesday, May 20, 2014

Spring has finally arrived in Butterlea. It was touch and go whether that would really happen. But, it's here and with it comes the chores like cutting grass, chopping firewood for next winter, and putting in the vegetable garden.

Crumb recently arrived in town and since the sun is shining today, he set out to look for work. First stop is the cute little two story where Nixie and Murphy live.

Murphy was surprised at the knock on the door as she hadn't been expecting anyone. The dinosaur head at the window made her slightly cautious as she opened the door.

Crumb apologized for scaring her and explained that he was looking for work.
"I'm a great gardener," he explained.

"Have you got your own tools and equipment?" asked Murphy
"I sure do!" replied Crumb. "I can cut the grass, trim trees and till the soil for the vegetable garden."

By this time Nixie had come to the door too. Murphy introduced her to Crumb and explained that he was willing to look after the yard work and he had his own tools.

"Well, Mr. Crumb," said Nixie, "It looks like you are hired! I have a good supply of all natural bug spray to keep the mosquitoes away and if you come to the back door at lunch time, I'll see you get a nice tall glass of iced tea too."

And that's how Crumb got a job as grounds keeper at the sweet little two story.

Once again Grand has had to find space for a new adoptee here in In-Betwix.  It seems Aelbridge is a popular place for Tinies. This time though, much to Max's absolute delight, the new arrival is a boy.

Whiffy arrived a couple of weeks ago from a land down under and had never experienced the cold and snow that is still hanging on in Aelbridge. Of course Max couldn't wait to take him out and show him the ropes.

Building a snowman kept them occupied for quite a time!

Whiffy thinks mittens might be a good option next time he goes out to play in the snow.

Monday, February 3, 2014

It's deep winter in In-Betwix. The days are cold and the nights even colder with lots of snow and wind.  It sure seemed like a long time until spring for the kids living with Grand!  The older kids in particular were tired of first bundling up the younger ones and then themselves just to go out and play for a few minutes.

So imagine how excited Molly, Hannah, Serenity and Calla were when Elia announced she was going with them on a mini vacation to to the sea side!  This was an event worthy of new clothes so Grand helped them order new outfits and once they had arrived by In-Betwix mail, a date was set for the adventure.

Elia was particularly anxious about her new outfit as she wanted to be taken seriously in her role of chaperone.

Grand assured her that this was an appropriate outfit. Of course, it was also suitable for an evening of dance too...just in case the opportunity should arise.

The morning of their departure arrived and dressed in their best, Grand dropped them at the train station. They would need to travel all morning on the high speed train just to get to the sea side and some warmer weather.  It was chilly without their winter gear but once on the train they quickly warmed up I'm sure in part due to the excitement of travelling to their destination.

Once they arrived, Elia took charge and found them a cab to deliver them to a bed and breakfast where they could leave all of their luggage before heading off to tea at a charming tea room near the beach.

The little girls, Serenity and Calla asked Elia if she would take their pictures and send them back to Grand.  So once tea was over, Elia got out the camera and took some pictures.

Hannah and Molly wanted their pictures done too.  They certainly look like they've been to the beach!

Calla and Serenity were hoping to build sandcastles but it was just a little cool. Elia assured them that they could come back in the summer.

All too soon, their stay at the seaside was over and it was time to head back Aelbridge and the snow.  There were stories aplenty to relay to the rest of the Aelbridge gang who I'm positive will be working a little harder at their school work now in hopes of future trips in which they might be included!
